SUMMARY:Jazz in the House: Martin Speake’s Charukesi
DESCRIPTION:A thrilling meeting of global musical traditions and contemporary jazz. \nFor more than 30 years\, acclaimed alto saxophonist\, composer and improviser Martin Speake has explored non-Western rhythmic and melodic approaches inspired by the music of many cultures\, creating a distinctive musical voice that is both adventurous and deeply engaging. \nHis latest project\, Charukesi\, named after an Indian raga\, brings these influences together at Lauderdale House. Drawing on Indian\, Arabic\, Turkish\, African and jazz traditions\, the group creates music rich in character\, energy and imagination. \nExpect direct\, groove-based music with compelling and memorable melodies\, rooted in a dynamic tuba and drums rhythm section\, with impassioned soloing and interaction from Martin Speake on alto sax\, Alyson Cawley on tenor sax and Mike Outram on guitar.

SUMMARY:LIVE (next to) THE APOLLO Presents JEN BRISTER + Friends
DESCRIPTION:Live Next To The Apollo\, the celebrated premier stand-up comedy club which resides at the iconic Riverside Studios in London – just down the street from THE legendary Hammersmith Apollo!  \n \nAfter rave reviews from Centenary audience members\, Live Next To The Apollo returns to Berkhamsted this Autumn. Previously we brought stars of Live At The Apollo Sara Pascoe\, Finlay Christie\, Laura Smyth\, Stephen K Amos and Hal Cruttenden to the Centenary Theatre. \n \nJen Brister is a critically acclaimed stand up comedian and writer who has been seen on BBC’s Live at the Apollo\, Mock the Week\, Frankie Boyle’s New World Order\, Hypothetical and Sara Pascoe’s Comedy Lectures on Dave. She is a regular performer on the UK and international comedy circuits and has written and performed on BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz\, The Now Show and presented for BBC 6 Music. \n \n● “Bold sketches\, surreal ideas and slick banter. Keep an eye out.” The Sunday Times \n● “Furiously Funny.” The Guardian \n● “Her energy is explosive. Her use of space and delivery mesmerising” The Sunday Times \n● “Gorgeously talented” Time Out \n● “Blisteringly funny…Brister is a truly natural and gifted performer” The List \n \nMike Gunn A misspent youth and a series of grim jobs cultivated his cynical outlook on life and a perverse desire led him to the world of stand-up. A self-confessed pessimist\, he describes himself as “not a natural choice for a career in laughter”. He has a rare ability to walk close to the line of what audiences find acceptable and yet still remain likable and funny. His reputation for being a bit unfriendly\, a touch dark and even morose is really not true. In real life he’s loving\, warm and philanthropic. Just a bit misunderstood. Mike has supported Michael McIntyre\, Jo Brand\, Alan Davies\, Lee Mack on tour. His TV credits include TV Credits: Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow\, Celebrity Deal or no Deal\, Harry Hill’s TV Burp\, Al Murray’s ‘Time Gentlemen Please’\, Soccer AM \, The Comedy Store (Comedy Central). He is currently a regular on the Sky Poker channel! \n \n● “ONE OF THE TOP TEN STAND-UPS IN THE COUNTRY” The Independent \n● “MIKE GUNN WILL MAKE YOU DIE LAUGHING” The Guardian \n \nEli Hart was a finalist in the Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year 2024 awards and then went on to win the BBC New Comedy Awards 2025. He has a remarkable astuteness for the minutiae of mundane existence. He wears his glum disappointment with pride\, and has a downbeat deadpan delivery that suits his West Midlands accent so well. Imagine a Brummie\, even gloomier young Jack Dee! \n \nThor Stenhaug Norwegian comedian Thor Stenhaug has just returned from his debut solo UK tour. He completely sold-out his run at the Soho Theatre in September\, which followed on from his sold-out Edinburgh Fringe run last summer. Thor has offered tour support for big hitters such as Josh Widdecombe\, Jack Dee and Fern Brady. He was shortlisted for British Comedian of the Year – despite not being British! \n \n● “Stenhaug’s observational storytelling is effortlessly compelling… his material is razor-sharp” The Telegraph \n● “Norwegian comedy god of thunder has a storming debut.” The Scotsman \n● “Warm\, polished and replete with layered gags and clever callbacks” Edinburgh Review \n \n16+ age. Adult language and themes. Very occasionally acts may change from that advertised\, due to their TV and tour commitments\, which are beyond our control. Be assured we will always bill a premium line-up with laughs guaranteed!

SUMMARY:Simon Yates of Touching the Void – My Mountain Life
DESCRIPTION:A fascinating and humorous evening\, acclaimed by both regular theatre patrons and outdoor enthusiasts alike! \nOn the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985\, mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner\, Joe Simpson\, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed and with the publication of the book ‘Touching The Void’\, later film and stage play\, both climbers became household names. \n\nIt was an experience that could have put many off the sport of mountaineering – but not Simon. Over 35 years later\, he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide\, making several expeditions to the mountains each year. From the Arctic to the Antarctic\, Alaska to Central Asia there is hardly a significant range that he has not visited. \n\nCome along and witness Simon’s tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama\, excitement and beauty of modern\, lightweight alpinism. Told with wit\, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and film collected on his great climbs. \n\n“Simon is a totally engaging speaker\, who both entertains and inspires.”

SUMMARY:Twelve People Telling True Stories — Phone-Free\, Alcohol-Free\, Central London
DESCRIPTION:There is a room in central London where\, one Saturday a month\, twelve people sit in a circle and tell each other true things. No one is on their phone. No one is drinking. And nobody has to say a word if they don’t want to. \nThe Story Blanket runs intimate storytelling circles for people who are tired of the same three conversations. Where do you work. How was your journey. Have you been away anywhere nice. The format is deliberately simple: twelve people\, one question\, and an hour and forty-five minutes with nothing else competing for anyone’s attention. \nThe afternoon has four parts. The Arrival is ten minutes with a hot drink before anything formal begins — no one is put on the spot\, and there’s time to settle. Then The Question: a single prompt is offered to the room\, and whoever wants to answer it does\, four or five minutes each\, no notes and no preparation. Past circles have started from questions as simple as “your favourite place in the world” and gone somewhere nobody expected. \nThe Pause comes next — twenty minutes of tea\, coffee and snacks\, and the conversations that tend to start the moment the formal part stops. Most people say this is the best bit. Then The Return\, where the circle picks up the same question again\, except by then the room has changed and people say things they wouldn’t have said an hour earlier. \nTwo rules\, and only two. Phones go into bags when everyone sits down. And there’s no alcohol — not out of principle\, but because the conversation goes somewhere different without it. \nWhat there isn’t: networking\, name badges\, icebreakers\, or any obligation to perform. “Listening counts as participation” is stated plainly on the ticket page\, and it’s meant literally. Plenty of guests sit quietly through the first round and speak in the second. Some don’t speak at all\, and that’s a completely normal way to spend the afternoon. \nMost people come on their own. The format is built for it — a circle of strangers turns out to be easier to be honest in than a room of people who already know your version of yourself. \nThe first circle ran on 1 August 2026. One guest wrote afterwards that she “left feeling genuinely moved” and found herself “rediscovering parts of my own past\, including little forgotten pieces of childhood I hadn’t thought about in years.” Another called it “the perfect antidote to digital fatigue.” \nThe next circle is Saturday 17 October\, from 1:15pm to 3:00pm\, in central London. The sitting is capped at twelve people. The room holds more; they seat twelve\, so that everyone who wants to speak can. \nCoffee\, tea\, water and sweet and savoury snacks are included. Allergens are clearly labelled\, though specific allergies can’t be catered for. The full address is emailed to ticket holders twenty-four hours before\, and tickets are fully refundable up to seventy-two hours beforehand. \nThere’s an Early Seat rate of £24 for the first four tickets\, then £34.99 for the remaining eight. \nGuests are invited to bring something small to hold — a book they’re reading\, a photograph\, an object with a story in it. Nobody has to use it. Most people find they want to. \nTickets: https://buytickets.at/thestoryblanket?ref=whatsonnorth\nWebsite: thestoryblanket.co.uk
